Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)
Hormone Replacement Therapy is a natural and safe way to achieve hormone balance. Both men and women can benefit from natural hormone replacement therapy. Hormones are used to relieve symptoms of menopause, andropause, hysterectomies, and hyperthyroidism, as well as similar hormone imbalances when exercise and a good diet are not enough.

Hormone levels fluctuate throughout life causing imbalances to occur at different times which can cause many life impacting symptoms such as:
              * Fatigue                                                           * Disturbed sleep
              * Irritability                                                      * Osteoporosis
              * Heart disease                                                * Reduced libido
              * Weight gain                                                   * Sexual dysfunction
              * Common symptoms of menopause          * Loss of muscle mass
              * Headaches and migraines                          * Infertility
              * Memory loss

Getting Started

The Hormone Replacement Therapy program at the Safeway Compounding Pharmacy was created to help patients and prescribers establish natural hormone replacement therapies that are patient specific.

1. Patient Education
At the Safeway Compounding Pharmacy we believe that the more knowledge you have, the more power you have to stay healthy. We recommend that you first educate yourself about conditions related to hormone imbalance, such as menopause or andropause, and their relative treatment options.

The following reading material is suggested for patients as well as healthcare providers:
                    "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause" by Dr. John Lee
                    "HRT Solutions" by Marla Alhgrimm
                    "Natural Hormone Replacement" by Dr. Jonathan Wright.  (short and informative)
                    "The Sexy Years",  by Suzanne Somers. (brought more attention to hormones)

You can also reference books written by other HRT experts such as Drs. Susan Rako, Eugene Shippen, and Christiane Northrup.

We also host free seminars, that are designed to provide an in-depth review of the HRT process. Click on the "Seminars" or "Consultations" tabs for more information.

2. Medical History/Hormone Evaluation Form
Once you have become familiar with HRT and would like to proceed with our HRT program, click on the following links:
                    HRT Evaluation Form - Female
                    HRT Evaluation Form - Male

This form reviews the following:
          - medical history                          - current/past medications,
          - diet,                                           - exercise,
          - current symptoms,                    - much more.

When completed, you can mail (6100 Hellyer Ave #100, San Jose, Ca), fax (1-408-227-1206) or e-mail ( the completed form to our pharmacy.

Once we receive the form, we will contact you to set up an initial, complimentary 15 minute consultation. This can be done in person or over the phone, at your convenience. We will explain how to use the ZRT hormone test kit, as well as answer any questions you have about our program.

3. Testing Hormone Levels
The Safeway Compounding Pharmacy is an approved distributor for ZRT Test Kits, which we offer to patients interested in testing their hormone levels. Use the test kit to collect the saliva sample in the privacy of your home. Then, fill out the accompanying material and choose which hormones levels need to be measured. We usually receive the results from the ZRT lab approximately 5-7 days after the kit is mailed in.

4. Consultation
Once we have your completed confidential HRT evaluation form and saliva test results, one of our pharmacists will conduct a comprehensive hormonal consultation and evaluation. During this evaluation, we will review your personal history, family history, current medical situation, and signs and symptoms associated with hormone imbalance. Finally, our pharmacists will make the appropriate hormone dosing recommendations and work with your physician to come up with the best hormone treatment plan for you.

5. Prescription
HRT requires a prescription, so we work closely with your physician to come up with the best hormone treatment plan for you. We recommend that you initiate and maintain your HRT program through your current healthcare provider, as he/she is aware of your general state of health and will monitor other conditions beyond hormonal imbalance. Once your healthcare provider has reviewed your HRT plan, he/she will contact our pharmacists to approve or deny the recommendation. Once the approval for therapy is given, hormone replacement can begin.

6. Follow-up and Ongoing HRT Management
HRT is not a quick fix and requires monitoring during the first 3 to 12 months to ensure hormonal balance. Ongoing HRT management is essential to maintain this balance because as you age, your body changes and your hormone requirements change too. Our pharmacists are available to discuss any changes that you may experience. When changes need to be made to your therapy we can contact your healthcare provider and recommend the appropriate adjustments. Finally, in addition to taking your HRT prescriptions, we promote healthy lifestyle choices and proper nutritional supplements to achieve optimal results.

If you are currently on, or are considering the use of Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) and you think individualized HRT makes more sense than a one-size-fits-all approach, then please complete our HRT Evaluation Form-male or HRT Evaluation Form - female. This confidential form will be reviewed by a pharmacist who will contact you within 48-72 hours.
